SloFlow & Fascia Release FAQ
Everything you need to know about SloFlow, the cedar block, our community, and how to get started.
About SloFlow
What is SloFlow?
SloFlow is a somatic fascia release practice created by Heidi Hunter and Helen Ronnenbergh. It is a slower, more body-aware approach that works with your nervous system rather than pushing through pain.
/"Soma"/ is a Greek word meaning the body as perceived from within. Somatic practice is simply the act of returning to that inner awareness. SloFlow invites you to slow down, breathe deeply, and listen inward. That inner listening is what creates deeper fascia release, nervous system regulation, and gradual restorative alignment.
What is fascia?
Fascia is the body's hidden web — a continuous sheet of connective tissue woven through and around every muscle, bone, nerve, and organ, from your scalp to your soles, without a single break. It holds your shape, transmits movement, and carries the memory of every injury, posture, and stress pattern you've ever had.
When fascia becomes dehydrated, compressed, or stuck, whether from injury, stress, poor posture, or just not moving enough, it can restrict movement, create pain, and affect your breathing and posture. SloFlow works directly with fascia, using slow sustained pressure and breath to help it soften and release.
How is SloFlow different from Block Therapy™?
Block Therapy™ created the awareness of how important fascia release is. SloFlow grew from that awareness.
Instead of seeking pain or forcing the body to change, SloFlow slows the practice down so your nervous system can feel safe and your body can relax, soften, and release.
Do I have to feel pain for SloFlow to work?
No. In SloFlow, pain is not the goal.
You will feel sensation, pressure, warmth, emotion, or areas of resistance, but the practice is designed to help your brain to become aware of habitual tension, so your body can remember how to relax and release rather than brace against discomfort. If something feels sharp, stressful, or too intense, you back off, breathe, and let your body feel safe again.
Why did Helen move from Block Therapy™ to SloFlow?
Helen saw that lasting fascia release is not about chasing intensity. The body releases more deeply when it feels safe, supported, and listened to.
SloFlow was created with Heidi Hunter to bring fascia release into a slower somatic practice, with more nervous system awareness and less risk of pushing too hard.
Do I need the cedar block to do SloFlow?
You can start without one, using a rolled up towel, or book wrapped in a towel. The free towel classes on this site use a rolled towel to introduce you to fascia release. But the cedar block makes a real difference. Its density, shape, and weight allow gravity to work in ways a towel simply can't replicate.
Most students notice more benefit once they start working with the block.
Is SloFlow suitable for beginners?
Absolutely. SloFlow is designed to be accessible regardless of your fitness level, age, or experience with bodywork. The practice is done lying or sitting on the floor, the movements are slow and gentle, and you work at your own pace.
Many of Helen's students come to her having already tried everything else. SloFlow works wherever you're starting from.
As with any movement or bodywork practice, please consult your healthcare provider before beginning if you have a medical condition, recent injury, or are pregnant. SloFlow is a wellness practice and is not intended to diagnose, treat, or replace medical advice.
.What conditions can SloFlow help with?
Students have reported experiencing improvements in areas including chronic back pain, hip pain, neck tension, posture, breathing patterns, stress, anxiety, sleep quality, and general mobility. Some students have also noticed relief from myofascial tension and trigger point discomfort, including those living with conditions such as fibromyalgia.
Because SloFlow works at the fascial level, it may help address contributing factors rather than symptoms alone. Individual results vary, and SloFlow is a wellness practice, not a medical treatment. These reports reflect personal experiences and are not intended to imply that SloFlow diagnoses, treats, or cures any condition. If you have a health condition, please consult your healthcare provider before beginning.
How is SloFlow different from yoga, pilates, or stretching?
Yoga, pilates, and stretching work primarily with muscles. SloFlow targets fascia, the connective tissue that wraps around and through your entire body.
Fascia responds to slow, sustained pressure and warmth rather than active stretching or contraction. That's why SloFlow looks very still: you hold a position while breathing, giving fascia time to soften and release.
There is also an important neurological dimension. The brain learns from muscles lengthening, contracting, and releasing. It does not learn from passive stretching alone. Pushing further into a stretch may offer temporary relief, but without the somatic component, the nervous system is not truly engaged. SloFlow incorporates this somatic element, which is why the results tend to go deeper and last longer than stretching alone.
It's also different from foam rolling. A foam roller compresses and rolls across the tissue quickly. That's useful, but it doesn't give fascia the sustained, still load it needs to truly release. Our cedar block and your own bodyweight create the slow, non-compressible pressure that works at a deeper level.
How is SloFlow different from seeing a massage therapist or myofascial release therapist?
A massage therapist works on your body from the outside. Their hands apply pressure and move tissue from the surface. SloFlow is a self-practice: you use your own bodyweight and the cedar block to create slow, sustained pressure from within your own body.
This means you can practise daily, at home, without booking appointments. Our cedar block can also reach certain areas (deep hip, psoas, diaphragm, rib work) with the kind of sustained, still pressure that fascia responds to and that hands alone find difficult to maintain. Many students use SloFlow alongside occasional bodywork and find the two work well together.
Getting Started
Where do I begin?
Start with the free towel classes on the Classes page. They require no equipment and introduce you to the fundamentals of SloFlow somatic fascia release.
Once you've had a feel for the practice, the next step is getting your blocks and joining the community for live classes with Helen or Heidi.
How often should I practise?
Even 20–30 minutes three to four times a week produces noticeable change. Daily practice accelerates results.
The key is consistency, not intensity. SloFlow isn't about pushing hard. It's about showing up regularly and letting your body release at its own pace.
Can I do SloFlow if I have an injury or medical condition?
I am not a medical professional, please consult your healthcare provider before starting any new movement practice if you have a serious medical condition.
Helen also offers free 1:1 calls where she can discuss your specific situation and help you determine whether SloFlow is right for you.
Can I do SloFlow during pregnancy or postpartum?
Always consult your midwife, obstetrician, or GP before starting any new body practice during pregnancy.
Can I practise SloFlow if I am older or have limited mobility?
Absolutely, SloFlow works well for older bodies and anyone with limited mobility. The practice is done lying or sitting on the floor, the movements are slow and gentle, and everything is fully adaptable to your own range. There is no requirement for flexibility, strength, or fitness.
Many of Helen's students are in their 50s, 60s, and beyond, and find SloFlow one of the most accessible and effective practices they have tried. If you have specific limitations or conditions, a free call with Helen is the best place to start.
What do I need at home to practise SloFlow?
Very little. For the free towel classes, you only need a rolled hand towel. That's it. Once you have our cedar block, you need enough floor space to lie down and a mat or folded blanket for comfort.
No special equipment, clothing, or fitness level is required. SloFlow is designed to be a home practice you can do whenever suits you.
What results can I expect, and how quickly?
Many students notice improved breathing, reduced tension, and better sleep within the first week or two. Structural changes like improved posture, reduced chronic pain, and greater mobility typically develop over four to twelve weeks of consistent practice.
Results vary depending on how long your body has held its patterns, but consistent practice sees change.

What is our block made of, and why cedar?
The blocks are hand-finished in Canadian western red cedar. Cedar was chosen for its natural density: it holds your bodyweight without compressing, which is essential for creating the slow, sustained pressure that fascia needs to release.
Cedar is also naturally antimicrobial, has a gentle warming quality that supports tissue softening, and becomes more beautiful with use as the natural oils develop. Each block is hand-finished individually, so each one carries the small natural variations of real craftsmanship.
How do I care for my cedar block?
Cedar blocks require minimal care. Wipe with a dry or slightly damp cloth after use. Avoid soaking or leaving in direct sunlight for long periods. The natural oils in cedar mean no treatment or conditioning is needed.
Store your block flat in a dry place. With regular use the wood will develop a beautiful patina over time. Cedar is soft, so succeptible to scratches and dents, if the surface becomes rough, a light sand with fine-grit paper will restore it.
Is there a refund policy for the blocks?
Yes. If your block arrives damaged or there is an issue with your order, please contact us within 14 days of receiving it and we will make it right.
For full details see our Refund Policy. If you have questions before purchasing, Helen is happy to chat on a free call.
How long does SloFlow take?
Most SloFlow classes are about 30–40 minutes long, with some longer specialised classes or programs.
The practice is intentionally slower than traditional fascia release work, so you have time to breathe, relax, and let your body respond. You can practise several times a week anytime of the day.
Why are my ribs so sore?
Rib soreness can happen when long-held compression begins to soften, especially if the ribcage has been tight or hunched for a long time.
In SloFlow we slow the practice down intentionally, so there is less chance of pushing too hard. If soreness occurs, apply heat, breathe gently, rest when needed, and please reach out so we can guide you further.
Can I overdo SloFlow?
It is possible to do too much of any body practice if you ignore your body's signals.
SloFlow has been slowed down intentionally so there is less chance of injury or overdoing it. The aim is not to push, chase pain, or force a release. Stay relaxed, breathe easily, rest when your body asks, and let the release happen gradually.
